Many of you are asking the question “Is Thailand Open For Tourism?” Well, the answer is yes, but with a catch. Thailand’s economy has been battered by the lack of tourism due to COVID19, so Thai Government Officials recently decided to open up the country to tourists again, but with restrictions.
Thailand Quarantine in ASQ Hotels
While Thailand is now open for tourism, it requires a mandatory 14 day Quarantine in an ASQ (Alternative State Quarantine) Hotel. The prices you’ll pay for these ASQ hotels are a lot more than what you’d pay for a usual Airbnb apartment. Here is a list of the Cheapest ASQ hotels in Bangkok for under 40,000 Baht ($1334 USD). Keep in mind that it may be difficult to find an affordable ASQ hotel in Bangkok that is actually vacant, as demand will be the highest for the cheapest ASQ Hotels.
While these prices might sound high, they do include 3 meals per day as part of the package. In addition, you get a free pickup from the airport in a private car to your ASQ hotel. During your stay in the Hotel, your temperature will be taken twice per day. If your temperature is over 37.5C then you will be transferred to a hospital. Mandatory Covid tests are included on days 5 and 13 of your stay.
Thailand New 60 Day Tourist Visa
Visas on arrival are no longer possible in Thailand with the covid19 pandemic. Instead, you’ll have to obtain an offshore visa before you travel to Thailand. There is a new 60 day Thai Tourist Visa which replaced the usual 30 day tourist visa on arrival. This is to compensate for 14 days lost due to mandatory quarantine in an ASQ Hotel.
If you want to stay even longer than 60 days you can now get another new type of Thai Visa called the “Thailand Special Tourist” or STV.
Thailand Special Tourist Visa For Long Term Travellers
The Thailand Special Tourist Visa is ideal for long term travellers and lets you stay for up to a total of 270 days in Thailand. The STV lets you first stay 90 days, then you can get two extensions of 90 days each, making for a total of 270 days. The cost of the Special Tourist Visa is 2,000 Baht.
This is actually quite generous because the Thai government made it much more difficult to stay in Thailand long term before the Covid19 pandemic hit. So if you want to stay for a long time in Thailand, this may be a good opportunity to do so while they have this new visa. The costs saved from Airbnb hosts slashing their prices due to low demand are more than likely to compensate for the ASQ Hotel expenditure.
Thailand Special Tourist Visa Requirements
- Proof of accommodation after the 14-day quarantine, which could be any of the following:
- Proof of payment for hotel or accommodation to be used after discharge from quarantine.
- Copy of a condominium title deed owned by the visitor or a family member.
- Evidence of renting accommodation – condominium or house.
- Evidence of payment for the purchase or lease of a condominium-type residence that foreigners can legally buy or lease.
- Proof of medical and travel insurance policy
Medical and Travel Insurance with a minimum 100,000 USD coverage for COVID-19 medical treatment and a minimum coverage of 400,000 THB for other medical and accident expenses. The insurance must cover for at least 90 days which is the initial validity of the visa.
NOTE: Some embassies will reject your COE application if you do not have the correct format for the Health Insurance. In order to have the correct insurance for the COE. You may check HERE.
Foreigners with the evidence needed above will be eligible to apply for an STV from Thai embassies or consulates in selected countries.
As proof of travel insurance is required, I would recommend getting travel insurance through World Nomads.

Conclusion – Thailand Open For Tourism
Yes, it’s true about Thailand open for tourism during COVID19, but it comes with some restrictions and expense. It may only be worth visiting if you can stay long term on the Special Tourist Visa (STV), to cover the expense of the mandatory quarantine in an ASQ Hotel. The STV is actually quite generous, so it may be your only chance to spend a long time in Thailand before the Thai government decides to restrict Visas again.
